The Department of Justice expanded its antitrust investigation into the beef industry on Monday, citing concerns that dominant meatpackers are inflating consumer costs and weakening market competition.
According to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, the level of packer concentration has surged from just 25% in 1977 to 71% by 1992, and now to an astonishing 85%.
